Sweetest Day Flowers & Gifts

Sweetest Day

Although originally established in Cleveland – and still celebrated mainly in the Midwest and Northeastern United States – Sweetest Day has slowly been making its way across the country, and for good reason. This 100-year-old observance seeks to give small presents and surprises to those who may be going through a hard time, in order to give them encouragement. Whether a handwritten note or a bouquet of flowers, any gesture which brings a smile to someone’s face is appropriate on Sweetest Day. Of course, as Sarasota’s premiere florist, Beneva has the floral designs and gifts guaranteed to make their day. Origins of Sweetest Day: In the early 1900’s, a group of candy company executives in Ohio got together and distributed 26,000 boxes of candy to the underprivileged – orphans, shut-ins, the homeless and the out-of-work. Their actions were seen as less than altruistic, however, as many saw the act as an effort to establish a new tradition which ultimately benefited their coffers more than the recipients of the candy. Still, the idea of giving gifts to those who may be struggling is a great one, and is the aspect of the holiday still celebrated today. ‘

We asked some Sarasota residents what some of their favorite acts of kindness are, and here are some of their responses:

* Handwritten notes of encouragement, especially if hidden to be found later
* Offering to drive someone without a car around for errands, or to doctor’s appointments.
* Taking delivery of a package or flowers for a neighbor, and tipping the delivery person.
* Bringing dinner to an elderly or shut-in neighbor.

Of course, giving flowers to cheer someone up is a time-honored tradition. Whether daisies, roses, lilies, orchids – no matter your choice, flowers go a long way to letting someone know that you have thier back, and are rooting for them. So if someone you know is having a tough time, October 21 is the day to let them know they are not alone – with a gift from Beneva.
