Did you know that Father’s Day was created due to the love for Mother’s Day? The first statewide celebration was in 1910, but the holiday wasn’t actually recognized nationwide until 1972. In its infancy the holiday was not met with enthusiasm by many men. One historian wrote that most men, “scoffed at the holiday’s sentimental attempts to domesticate manliness with flowers and gift-giving,” (history.com). It wasn’t until World War II that Americans rallied behind Father’s Day using it as a second Christmas and a way to honor the American troops. Today, Father’s Day is an American tradition often celebrated with barbeques, gifts of love and enjoying the great outdoors by attending a sporting event, golfing or even fishing.
