Customary Funeral Florals: These elongated, graceful stems are also called sword lilies, their name borrowed from the weapons of the Roman gladiators. This connection signifies integrity of character, remembrance, loyalty, and moral strength; and is therefore a meaningful flower for funeral services for those we love. However, they are not the only flower that is considered appropriate, as roses, lilies and carnations are also commonly used for memorial arrangements.
The selection of funeral florals will generally depend on your relationship with the deceased. The casket spray or urn arrangement are traditionally chosen and purchased by the immediate family. Sprays, wreaths and crosses are often sent via friends, business colleagues or relatives; and are most often sent directly to the funeral home. If you wish to send a memorial to the cemetery, a funeral cone or silk arrangement is appropriate to decorate the resting place.
Please Note: It is not considered proper etiquette to send a formal standing cross,wreath or spray to someone’s house.
If you wish to send personal flowers, it is always appropriate to have a bouquet sent directly to a residence. These can be a memorial arrangement, perhaps with a cross or angel; a bouquet of favorite flowers, or even a green plant which will express your sentiments for a long time. You may also wish to schedule a delivery of flowers a month in advance so that after all the guests have left, your loved ones will know that you are still thinking of them.
